Campbell Newman is tearing the heart out of the Far North. His plan for privatisation, dressed up as “contestability”, is a plan that will leave families in the Far North even further behind. Privatisation will mean big companies run services for profit not for localised services for localised needs.
One of our big local employers, the prison located in Mareeba, is in the firing line of contestability. Not only is this as key local employer but it’s central to the safety of our wider community. I know that Mareeba locals want locals to stay in charge of this prison, not a big company that cares more about profits from prisoners than what it gives back to the Far North.
We’re holding a community forum that gives locals a chance to have their say on the Newman government’s privatisation plans. All locals are invited, because attacks on services through privatisation will hit us all hard.
The government says they want a debate about their Queensland Plan - so let’s give them one!
